A recent study estimated that almost 50% of five-year olds are not ready for education. Consequently, teachers are spending increasing amounts of time and resources helping children who do not have basic skills, such as being able to hold a pencil, recognising their name when it’s written down, or being toilet trained.
The unique Big Hopes Big Future programme, instigated by Home-Start UK, works directly with supported parents and children, helping children to build the skills they need to be ready for the first day of school. Using original materials, our specially-trained volunteers work with the children to help develop reading, writing, numeracy, and understanding of the routines of the school day.
