Join us on Tuesday\, 14th October 2025\, from 12:15 pm to 2:15 pm at The Old Bull Inn\, Royston\, SG8 9AW\, for an afternoon of conversation and good company. \n\n\n\nFreya will be talking to the wonderful Jude Simpson about her latest book “The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne” as well as a couple of her other published books\, “The Turning Point” and “Little Wing”. \n\n\n\nFreya North\n\n\n\n\n\nFreya North is the author of 16 bestselling novels which have been translated into several languages. Her most recent novels include the Richard and Judy pick Little Wing and The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne which was published to great critical acclaim in 2024. \n\n\n\nFreya is patron of Society of Women Writers & Journalists and also Refuge in Literacy. She is editor of The Book Lover’s Journal and has judged the Costa Book Awards. She has degrees in Art History from the University of Manchester and the Courtauld Institute and leads creative writing workshops. She lives on a small farm in Hertfordshire. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Synopsises\n\n\n\n📙 The Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne (2024)\n\n\n\nThe Unfinished Business of Eadie Browne follows the journey of Eadie\, an eccentric child growing up in a small town\, navigating the challenges of bullying and the complexities of her family life. As she moves to Manchester in the late 1980s\, she is swept into the city’s vibrant rave culture\, seeking freedom and self-discovery. However\, her past catches up with her\, leading to unforeseen consequences. Now in her thirties\, Eadie returns to her hometown for a funeral\, reflecting on her past and the loose ends that must be addressed before she can move forward. \n\n\n\n📗 Little Wing (2022)\n\n\n\nLittle Wing is a poignant tale spanning three generations. In the 1960s\, a pregnant 16-year-old is sent away to one of the remotest parts of the UK. Decades later\, Nell and Dougie find their lives intersecting at critical junctures. Set against the backdrop of Camden\, Colchester\, and the Outer Hebrides\, the novel delves into themes of resilience\, forgiveness\, and the true meaning of family. As secrets are uncovered and answers sought\, the story explores the complexities of identity and belonging. \n\n\n\n📘 The Turning Point (2016)\n\n\n\nIn The Turning Point\, Canadian musician Scott Emerson and British author Frankie Shaw meet by chance over a single weekend\, sparking a profound connection. Despite the vast distance between their homes—Frankie lives in North Norfolk with her children\, while Scott’s roots lie deep in the mountains of British Columbia—they decide to explore their newfound relationship. Their journey is filled with sacrifice and risk as they navigate the complexities of love and family. But fate delivers a tragic twist that threatens to unravel their happiness\, challenging them to seize love where they find it and trust that it will always find a way. \n\n\n\nWhy Freya North is the Perfect Guest Author for Home-Start\n\n\n\nFreya North’s writing resonates deeply with the mission of Home-Start\, as her novels often explore themes of family\, resilience\, and personal growth. Her characters frequently face challenges such as isolation\, identity\, and the complexities of relationships – issues that align with the experiences of many families supported by Home-Start. Beyond her literary work\, Freya is actively involved in community initiatives and her commitment to supporting families and fostering community makes her an ideal guest author for an event dedicated to empowering parents and enriching the lives of children. \n\n\n\nPurchase your tickets here

Join us on Tuesday\, 29th July 2025\, from 12:15 pm to 2:15 pm at The Old Bull Inn\, Royston\, for an afternoon of conversation and good company. \n\n\n\nSuzanne will be in conversation with Sarah Harrison\, discussing her debut novel Two Old Ladies and a Secret Child – a heartwarming and suspenseful story about courage\, friendship\, and doing the right thing\, no matter the odds. \n\n\n\nSuzanne Shearing\n\n\n\n\n\nSuzanne Shearing is a retired journalist\, stage school founder and filmmaker. She began her career as a cub reporter on the Welwyn Hatfield Times\, later writing news\, features and a local column for both regional and national newspapers. \n\n\n\nIn 1995\, Suzanne followed her love of theatre and film\, training at drama school before opening a part-time stage school in Hertfordshire. It quickly grew into the county’s most successful of its kind\, with 300 students and 14 teachers across drama\, dance and singing. \n\n\n\nIn retirement\, she turned to screenwriting and has since produced two feature films – No Smoke and Archie – both distributed internationally\, along with a short film\, Nobody’s Child. No Smoke was an official selection at the Marbella International Film Festival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTwo Old Ladies and a Secret Child is her debut novel – something she never imagined achieving\, especially after years of keeping her writing short and snappy as a journalist! \n\n\n\nSuzanne now lives in rural Hertfordshire with her dogs\, Rusty and Geordie. She’s currently working on her next novel\, having discovered fiction is far more fun than facts. \n\n\n\nBook Synopsis\n\n\n\nWhen a lonely pensioner opens her door to find a baby abandoned on the doorstep\, she’s thrown into the heart of a royal scandal. The child isn’t just lost – it’s the secret\, illegitimate offspring of a royal family member. \n\n\n\nAs the press and authorities scramble to uncover the truth\, a dangerous man named Charles begins his own search\, one that has nothing to do with love or justice. With his threats closing in\, the old lady and her sharp-witted best friend make a life-changing decision: to flee the country and protect the child at all costs. \n\n\n\nSuddenly on the run in a foreign land\, with no plan and even less money\, the two women must rely on courage\, friendship and quick thinking to outwit their pursuers and keep the baby safe. \n\n\n\nWarm\, suspenseful and full of heart\, Two Old Ladies and a Secret Child is an uplifting tale of unlikely heroes\, second chances\, and what it really means to do the right thing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy Suzanne Shearing is the Perfect Guest for Home-Start\n\n\n\nSuzanne’s warm\, witty storytelling and rich life experience make her a wonderful guest author for Home-Start’s Literary Lunch. Her debut novel\, Two Old Ladies and a Secret Child\, explores themes of unexpected friendship\, protection\, and doing the right thing – echoing Home-Start’s mission to support families through life’s challenges. Suzanne’s journey from journalist to novelist later in life brings inspiration and encouragement\, aligning beautifully with our values of resilience\, care\, and community. \n\n\n\nPurchase your tickets here

SUMMARY:Literary Lunch - Clare Mulley
DESCRIPTION:Literary Lunch with Clare Mulley\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIntroducing Our Next Literary Lunch with Clare Mulley!\n\n\n\nWe are thrilled to announce our upcoming Literary Lunch event featuring the award-winning biographer and historian\, Clare Mulley! Join us on Tuesday\, 25th February 2025\, from 12:15 pm to 2:15 pm\, at The Bull Inn\, Royston. \n\n\n\nClare will be in conversation with our host\, Sarah Harrison\, about her latest book\, Agent Zo\, a captivating biography of Elżbieta Zawacka\, a WWII resistance fighter and the only female emissary of the Polish Home Army. This promises to be an inspiring and engaging event\, perfect for history enthusiasts and book lovers alike. \n\n\n\nClare Mulley\n\n\n\n\n\nClare Mulley is a distinguished British author and historian with a rich background in English Literature and History\, having studied at the University of Oxford. Her academic journey ignited her passion for uncovering the often-overlooked stories of women throughout history\, particularly those who made significant contributions during pivotal moments. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBefore becoming a full-time writer\, Clare worked in publishing and contributed to various media outlets\, where she developed her unique voice and honed her skills in storytelling. She is known for her meticulous research and ability to weave historical facts into compelling narratives. Her notable works include “The Spy Who Loved: The Secrets and Lives of One of Britain’s Most Acclaimed Women Spies\,” highlighting the extraordinary life of Violette Szabo\, a British agent during World War II. \n\n\n\nClare’s commitment to shedding light on the experiences of women in history has earned her acclaim and recognition in literary and historical circles. She frequently speaks at events and engages with audiences\, bringing her characters and their stories to life. Through her writing\, Clare not only educates readers about the past but also inspires them to appreciate the resilience and impact of women throughout history. \n\n\n\nBooks \n\n\n\nClare’s works shine a light on extraordinary women who shaped history\, such as: \n\n\n\nThe Woman Who Saved the Children – a biography of Eglantyne Jebb\, the founder of Save the Children\, which won the Daily Mail Biographers’ Club Prize. \n\n\n\nThe Spy Who Loved – detailing the life of Krystyna Skarbek\, a Polish-born British agent\, who became one of Britain’s most effective special agents during World War II. \n\n\n\nThe Women Who Flew for Hitler – a gripping account of Nazi Germany’s only female test pilots\, Hanna Reitsch\, who sought to save Hitler\, and Melitta von Stauffenberg\, who aimed to kill him. \n\n\n\nBook Synopsis\n\n\n\nThe focus of this lunch will be on Clare’s latest book\, “Agent Zo“. Here Clare tells the remarkable story of Elżbieta Zawacka\, known as ‘Zo\,’ the only female emissary of the Polish Home Army during World War II. As a member of the elite Special Forces\, the ‘Silent Unseen\,’ she made history in 1943 by becoming the first woman to parachute into Nazi-occupied Poland. \n\n\n\nIn Poland\, Zo played a crucial role in the Warsaw Uprising\, facing constant danger while being hunted by the Gestapo. Her bravery inspired fellow resistance fighters\, yet after the war\, she was imprisoned by the Soviet-backed communist regime\, which sought to suppress her incredible contributions for over four decades. \n\n\n\nClare Mulley’s biography combines new archival research and exclusive interviews\, reviving Zo’s legacy and honouring her courage. Agent Zo not only tells the tale of a forgotten heroine but also highlights the broader struggles of those who fought for freedom against tyranny. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy Clare Mulley is the Perfect Guest for Home-Start\n\n\n\nClare Mulley is the perfect guest for Home-Start’s Literary Lunch\, not only due to her engaging storytelling and insightful perspectives but also because of her previous involvement with our charity. In 2020\, Clare was the featured author at one of our successful Literary Lunches in Royston\, where she captivated the audience with her compelling narrative and passion for history. \n\n\n\nClare’s ability to connect with readers makes her an ideal guest for our upcoming event. Her focus on women’s contributions aligns perfectly with Home-Start’s mission to support families and empower communities. Inviting her will spark meaningful conversations about resilience and support\, enriching the experience for everyone involved. \n\n\n\nPurchase your tickets here
