Provide One-on-One Support to Families in Their Own Homes

At Home-Start Royston, Buntingford & South Cambridgeshire, our volunteers play a crucial role in supporting families facing a range of challenges, including isolation, financial difficulties, and mental health concerns.

By dedicating a few hours each week, you can help parents gain confidence, strengthen their family bonds, and give their children the best possible start in life. At the same time, you’ll be part of a supportive community and gain valuable skills and experiences.

What Does a Home-Visiting Volunteer Do?

Responsibilities:

  • Support is as individual as the families we work with and involves visiting one family for 2-3 hours each week.
  • Build a trusting relationship with the family.
  • Offer a listening ear and practical guidance.
  • Encourage playing and creative activities with children.
  • Support the development of parenting skills and behaviour management.
  • Signpost families to other local sources of support.
  • Accompany families to appointments and facilities in the area.

Essential Requirements:

  • Parenting experience is essential to understand and empathise with the challenges families face.
  • Availability to attend a six-week training course (one day per week).
  • Commitment to visit a family in their own home for 2-3 hours each week.
  • Enhanced DBS check (cost covered by Home-Start).

“Volunteering with Home-Start brings enormous satisfaction and self worth.  You can’t solve all their problems but you can make a difference even if its only for a short time.” – Natalie, Volunteer
