Become a Family Support Group Volunteer

How can I help?

Join our friendly team of volunteers who take turns on a rota basis to attend one of our three Family Support Groups in:

  • South Cambridgeshire on Mondays,
  • Buntingford on Wednesdays, or
  • Royston on Thursdays,

supporting both adults and children under 5 in a relaxed, friendly, non-judgemental environment.

What is involved?

Volunteers help with setting up and clearing away toys and equipment before and after each session, as well as spending time supporting children in their play, both indoors and outdoors.

They take turns helping with refreshments, managing the children’s craft activity, talking to parents and helping with activities for adults too.

Will I receive training and support?

Whenever possible, we encourage new volunteers to attend our full preparation course of nine sessions which enables them to support families through home visiting or family support groups.

We do, however, offer a one-day course for those who only wish to help at our groups.  Throughout your time as a volunteer, you will receive training updates and regular face-to-face informal support and supervision sessions with a co-ordinator.  You will also be invited to attend team meetings and peer-support sessions.

It’s very rewarding to see the positive results in the lives of families we are able to support.

How much time do I need to commit?

Typically, a volunteer spends 3 hours at a Family Support Group per session. The rota is arranged around volunteers’ availability, so you need not attend every week.

The sessions do not run during the school holidays, but there are some alternative activities in the summer which may require some volunteer support.

You will also benefit from one supervision session per term, which lasts about 1 hour.
