Juggling parenthood, work and everything else – a Dads eye view

Home-Start Royston, Buntingford & South Cambridgeshire supports local families, and often it is Mum we meet and help day to day. But you know what? Some Dads are also juggling parenthood, work and everything else and we know how important fathers are for their children’s upbringing and development. We encourage all local Dads out there to get in touch with us if they feel some extra support would be welcome.

Our latest blog is written by Andrew, one of our Home-Start Trustees, who is a parent of three primary school children. Andrew is also a business owner, an investor, a volunteer teacher and a school Governor. And we are sure that you will enjoy his snapshot into the hectic life of a working dad…

My Bluetooth

Like most of you, it is impossible that childcare duties and other commitments do not overlap, so I often find myself parenting while working and have come to rely on my Bluetooth earpiece. In fact, I have owned no less than 15 Bluetooth earpieces with microphones since having children! They are a lifesaver and enable me to be present and do things for my children while simultaneously working.

For instance:

Wife: “Can you pick up Child #3? My work video call is running over.”

Client: “Thank you all for joining today’s quarterly results meeting…”

Me thinking: “Nooooo, I’ve lost my Bluetooth. OK, I still have plug-in earbuds, but it means I need to be careful not to get them tangled in the seatbelt or pulled out when I turn to look out for cars”

Child #2: “Dad, can you take me to football?”

Client: “Are you still OK to lead the workshop tonight for our product launch?”

Me thinking: “Where is that Bluetooth earpiece and how quiet is the car park?  If I turn my virtual background on, will it hide that I am in my car?”

Child #3: “Dad, I’m hungry, is dinner ready?”

Client: “Can you provide an update on the project to the team now?”

Me thinking: “Yes, I found my Bluetooth!  Now I don’t have to worry about catching the earphone cables on a pan or accidentally chopping them while I cook and talk”

Child #1: “Dad, are you coming to my school assembly Friday morning?”

Client: “Can you join this TC with a country affiliate on Friday morning?”

Me thinking: “Thank goodness I found my Bluetooth earpiece! Do I need to say anything at this meeting? Could I get away joining and listening while also watching my daughter’s school assembly?”
