Keeping it Legal

When organising a fundraising event it's not worth taking any risks with safety or the law.

It will be your responsibility to make sure your event is safe and complies with any relevant authorities, if you require any assistance please contact Home-Start tel 01763 262262, email admin@hsrsc.org.uk or The Institute of Fundraising, 020 7840 1000 or enquiries@institute-of-fundraising.org.uk

If you are organising your own event

Licences
If you’re holding an event in a public area, inform the local council and police.

Insurance
You will need to take out insurance cover for your event. For more information, contact HSRSC email admin@hsrsc.org.uk

Risk Assessment
You may need to perform a risk assessment to identify any hazards and evaluate any risks at your event.

First Aid
Consider first aid provision. Some events will require it. Ensure you have adequate cover available for the scale of your event. If you’re not sure, check with your local council.

Photography
Only take photos of children at events with consent from parents/guardians.

Raffles
Raffles held at social events, do not need to be registered, but the raffle must be drawn at the event. Check the latest information and advice at www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk

Selling and Handling Food
Food safety laws apply when food is available at an event whether it is for sale or not. Check out references and/or qualifications of suppliers - e.g. if caterers or food suppliers have the relevant food hygiene and environmental health certificates. If you are preparing food yourself, you'll be well advised to get someone involved who has studied the basic food hygiene certificate course.

Alcohol
Check if the venue is licensed or contact your local council to find out more about getting a temporary licence.

Collections
It is illegal to carry out house-to-house or public street collections without a licence.  Only use Home-Start collecting tins when doing collections. Get them from the office or email admin@hsrsc.org.uk

Promotion
Include the charity's logo and registration number on all promotional materials and provide letters to authenticate your fundraising approaches. Home-Start Royston & South Cambridgeshire, a company limited by guarantee, Company No. 5183873 Registered Charity No 1105385
